Rhubarb is a nutritious vegetable. I really can't think of a more versatile vegetable food. It is nutritious and can VERY easily frozen for later use in pies, cakes, cookies, salsas, sauces, desserts, smoothies, breads, and even be used for dinner recipes! Why don't more people grow/buy/freeze rhubarb?

Hi
I attended the canning workshop at the Green Expo and it was excellent. The chef was personable, answered all of our questions (and more!) plus we got to taste test the jams that he produced during the session. Very impressed with the starter kit given to all attendees and, bonus, I'm 'over' my fear of pressure cookers!

Hey lovers of locally grown food. Remember your twin Sault growers, south of the border, also has great food for you on Wednesday evenings 4-7 pm. Get on our weekly e-mail list at ssm.farmers.market@gmail.com or tweet us at @ssmfarmersmrkt for more information. Due to street construction, we have moved this growing season to the North side of Ridge Street between MBank and the Lockview Laundromat. Follow the alley at Subway on Portage south to a cornucopia of locally grown food. I found ramps, eggs, hydroponic tomatoes and cukes, and baked goods for my taste buds. Check us out, you will meet the people that grow our food!

I too live on a double sized East End lot and would love to be able to keep 4-6 hens. Last year I kept 10 chicks in a brooder in my garage until they were large enough (feathered out enough) to take to our more rural summer home. There we built a small coop where they stayed, gave us some eggs, and then in late fall when it was time to return to the city for good, we slaughtered them and they now reside in our freezer. I believe I will do this again this year, however someday it would be so nice to be able to keep a few year round for egg production.

I've heard of people keeping rabbits for meat production in sheds lined with cages in their yards here in SSM.

When I lived on Queen Street East, just east of the golf course on a double lot, I wanted to keep laying hens. I went back & forth with my ward counsellor on the number of hens I could keep. At first the answer was an absolute "no" but after some negotiation it was concluded I could have 1 chicken, but if any of my neighbours were against it or complained I'd have to eat it for supper :( I figured there was no point keeping one hen. Now I live a bit further east in a quiet neighbourhood with another fairly private double lot and would love it if the bylaws would allow us to have them. Of course, they would need to be kept safe & not pester neighbours, so I'm sure the city would require a permit to build a proper coupe and hen yard. I'm all for it!

Congratulations on an absolutely wonderful website. I just found out about it this morning. This will make it so much easier for folks to find local products to reduce our carbon footprint AND to reduce the number of animals which have to suffer during long haul travel to southern Ontario abattoirs!
